ORIGINS OF THE NAME:

'NORA CREINA'

We’ve named the resort Nora Creina after the township and beach of ‘Nora Creina’ situated a further seven kilometres south of the dunes. There are a few ideas as to how Nora Creina got its name.

One idea is from the “Nora Creina”, a Brigantine ship that sank off the south-east coast of South Australia between Cape Martin and Cape Nelson on 1 January 1859. You can see more about it here. The nearby scenic beach was subsequently named “Nora Creina Beach”.

Another idea is that the name may have been derived from Nora Creina Bay which was named after Nora Creina Bacon, the daughter of Major General Anthony Bacon and Lady Charlotte Bacon and the wife of Charles Burney Young who were early settlers in the area.

One final ‘novel’ idea is that the name came from Nora Creina V1: A Novel. It is a classic work of fiction written by Margaret Wolfe Hungerford and originally published in 1893. The novel tells the story of Nora Creina, a young woman who grows up in poverty in Ireland but dreams of a better life.

Today, Nora Creina is a small settlement of about 60 shacks and holiday houses. The bay features a semi-circular white sand beach with 20-meter-high headlands and several reefs. The beach has a large sweep of sand that goes for some distance and is flanked by jagged limestone outcrops. Nora Creina Beach has many amenities, including bathroom access and lifeguards on duty during peak hours.
